Essential Questions
What do engineers do?
How do kids all over the world access books?
How can we get more kids engineering?

Project Time! Big World-Little Libraries
Our mission is to add an engineering shelf to the online library! To do this we are going to design some engineering challenges for kids around the world connected to our favorite fairytales!
Our Process
- We tackled several novel engineering challenges (see below). But then it was time to turn it upside down and design our own! To do this, we practiced scoping out the problems in a story, designing challenges, and making lists of material constraints. We worked with partners to design challenges for Muncha! Muncha! Muncha! and The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch.
- Next, we selected our fairytales and read them with an eye towards problem scoping.
- We made several unique design challenges and picked the best one.
- We have begun making our videos using ZOOM science videos as our model! We designed the set, created scripts, and decided who was going to say what. Can't wait to share them with you!
- Stop Motion time! We started to make our backgrounds, sets, and characters for our fairytale videos. We are using a great FREE stop motion app by Cat Eater. Super fun! Super easy!
- The Stop Motions have been air dropped into imovies. We are ready to add the narration and sound effects!
- Our movies are incredible!!! We can't wait to share them with you! They can be found here! http://coolbooksforeverybody.weebly.com/fairytale-engineering.html
Robots Speak Code- Another Side of Engineering
We love coding! So far we have:
- done some programming with Code and Go Mouse
- started Course 1 at Code Studio (https://studio.code.org)
Novel Engineering: Great Literature with an Engineering Challenge
- Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson
- CHALLENGE: Can you design a way to wake up bear from his hibernation?
- Rapunzel
- CHALLENGE: Can you design a safe way for Rapunzel to escape that tower?
- Twenty-one Elephants And Still Standing by April Jones Prince
- CHALLENGE: Can you design a bridge that can hold "21 somethings"?
Engineering Ideas for Home
- Try out our fairytale engineering challenges! http://coolbooksforeverybody.weebly.com/fairytale-engineering.html
- Don't miss the IMAX film Dream Big- Engineering Our World-A Heartfelt Story of Human Ingenuity at the Reuben H. Fleet
- I love the idea of setting out a building material at night with a building challenge card for the early rising engineer! You can download some great challenge cards here! http://picklebums.com/building-challenge-cards
- Here is a great resource for some online engineering gaming! http://pbskids.org/games/engineering

Can You Help?
Folks often ask me, "How can I help?" If you are interested in supporting the Engineering Lab through donating your time or materials, please shoot me an email ([email protected]). As our projects get fleshed out, I'll also post a wish list. In the meantime, if you're looking to donate, we always need a variety of different sized cups, tea sized boxes, and masking tape. LOTS AND LOTS OF MASKING TAPE. Thanks!
